flexcan_ping_pong_buffer_transfer

flexcan_ping_pong_buffer_transfer#

Overview#

The flexcan_pingpang_buffer_transfer example shows how to use the FlexCAN queue feature to create 2 simulate FIFOs that can receive CAN/CANFD frames:

In this example, 2 boards are connected through CAN bus. Endpoint A(board A) send CAN/CANFD messages to Endpoint B(board B) when user inputs the number of CAN messages to be sent in terminal. Endpoint B uses two receiving queues to receive messages in turn, and prints the message content and the receiving queue number to the terminal after any queue is full.

This example enables FlexCAN Individual RX Masking and Queue feature, which makes FlexCAN search for first free-to-receive matched Rx MBs and last non-free-to-receive Rx MBs.
If not, matching winner is the first matched Rx MB.

Node A transmit frame with ID 0x321. Node B Rx message buffer ID is 0x21, so Node B match ID 0x21 frames.
But masked by 0xFF in Receive Individual Mask register, Node B will match ID 0x321 frames.

When queue 1 finish receive, update queue 1 individual ID mask to 0x7FF, can only receive frame with ID 0x21. So queue 1 will ignore the next messages and the queue 2 start to receive frame.
When queue 2 finish receive, restore queue 1 individual ID mask to 0xFF, make it receive ID 0x321 frames again.

This example also demonstrates how to create custom FlexCAN IRQ handler.

This example limits maximum number of CAN messages to be send each time to 256.

Board settings

The example requires 2 sets of boards, each of them is mounted with the base board. A male-to-male CAN cable is required to connect the CAN2 instance (J11) between the 2 base boards.

Prepare the Demo
  1. Connect a USB cable between the PC host and the OpenSDA USB on the board.

  2. Open a serial terminal on PC for OpenSDA serial device with these settings:

    • 115200 baud rate

    • 8 data bits

    • No parity

    • One stop bit

    • No flow control

  3. Download the program to the target board.

  4. Either press the reset button on your board or launch the debugger in your IDE to begin running the example.

Running the demo

After connecting the two boards, these instructions display on each terminal window. One board must be chosen as node A and the other board as node B. (Note: Node B should start first) Data is sent continuously between the node A and the node B.

Considering special errata 005829 feature, the 1st valid MB should be used as reserved one.

Hardware requirements
  • USB Type-C cable

  • Two MCIMX93W-EVK board

  • JLink Plus

  • 12V~20V power supply

  • Personal Computer

Board settings

Switch S1101 to “ON” on two boards The example requires connecting between CAN pins of two boards. The connection should be set as follows:

Between two boards:

  • J1101-2(CANH) node A, J1101-2(CANH) node B

  • J1101-3(CANL) node A, J1101-3(CANL) node B

  • J1005-7(GND) node A, J1005-7(GND) node B

Note

Please run the application in Low Power boot mode (without Linux BSP). The IP module resource of the application is also used by Linux BSP. Or, run with Single Boot mode by changing Linux BSP to avoid resource conflict.

Prepare the Demo
  1. Connect 12V~20V power supply and JLink Plus to the board, switch SW301 to power on the board

  2. Connect a USB Type-C cable between the host PC and the J1401 USB port on the target board.

  3. Open a serial terminal with the following settings:

    • 115200 baud rate

    • 8 data bits

    • No parity

    • One stop bit

    • No flow control

  4. Download the program to the target board.

  5. Either re-power up your board or launch the debugger in your IDE to begin running the demo.

Running the demo

After connecting the two boards, these instructions display on each terminal window. One board must be chosen as node A and the other board as node B. (Note: Node B should start first) Data is sent continuously between the node A and the node B.

Prepare the Demo
  1. Connect the type-C USB cable between the PC host and the USB ports on the board.

  2. Open a serial terminal on PC for the serial device with these settings:

    • 115200 baud rate

    • 8 data bits

    • No parity

    • One stop bit

    • No flow control

  3. Download the program to the target board.

  4. Either press the reset button on your board or launch the debugger in your IDE to begin running the example.

Running the demo

After connecting the two boards, these instructions display on each terminal window. One board must be chosen as node A and the other board as node B. (Note: Node B should start first) Data is sent continuously between the node A and the node B.

This message displays on the node A terminal:
